Tom and Becky's relationship has an effect on all of Tom's thoughts and actions. When Becky gets sick he's worried that she might die, and when she ignores him it causes him to feel unwanted, and unneeded.

I agree with you Veronica, Becky has a big effect on what he does. For example when Becky rips the teachers book by mistake, Tom takes the blame for her, because he knows she couldn't handle the punishment.

I agree with both of you guys. I think that Becky and Tom have a strong friendship. You can tell because of the way that he watches out for her. He takes blame for her, worries about her, and wants her attention.

Tom's relationship with his aunt suggests the possibility that he is defiant due to his unacceptance of his mother being dead. Although we do not know a lot about his mom, she may have been there early in Tom's life. Therefore, he doesn't listen to his aunt because he still can't comprehend the death of his mother.

Or maybe he just is a rebellious person.

I think that if his mom would have never died, he would treat her exactly how he treats his aunt. I say that because people don't realize what they have and how lucky they should be to have it until after it is gone. My cousin lost his dad a year ago and he doesn't behave very well because he doesn't have a father figure to look up to and follow. That could also be the same with Tom.

Towards the beginning of the book, Tom is walking in his neighborhood and spots a new girl he hasn't seen before. He starts showing off to her and doing tricks in front of her yard. In church he stumbles when talking in front of a group of people because the man that is asking him questions is the girl's father. Therefor, even though he doesn't have much of any kind of relationship with this girl, she has influenced his actions.

I agree that the new girl influences Tom, and I think that it is because he seemingly has an incredible want to fall in love with a girl, and fast. Therefore he has these feelings for her, and he is influenced by them even though they are in effect oddly fast. Most likely these feelings have no real meaning to Tom, but this want to fall in love pushes the feelings and makes him act upon them.

I disagree, she has influenced him, but she not been the only reason he changed. He has other sources to his meaning of change.

I think that his relationship with Becky effects him the most because after she breaks his heart by leaving him he goes off "pirating." also when he comes back he ignores Becky and so she gets back at him by sitting next to Alfred Temple whom Tom hates. This causes Tom great sorrow mixed with a little hatred.

I am choosing Tom's relationship with his aunt. When he ran away to be pirates with Joe and Huckleberry, he got homesick and missed his family. When he snuck back home, he overheard his aunt morning with Joe's mother. His aunt has always tried to control Tom, but has always been unsuccessful and let him off the hook. However, Tom was so moved by his aunt's sadness (thinking Tom had died) that he almost gets teared up as well. When he left, he kissed his aunt after she fell asleep.
Then, when Tom, Joe, and Huck went home, Tom tells his aunt about his "dream" about when he snuck into his house and overheard everyone mourning. When his aunt found out that it was true, and Tom insists that he was going to leave a piece of bark saying that he was alive. When she finds a piece of bark that Tom was originally going to leave for her so she knew that he wasn't really dead she then says, " I could forgive the boy, now, if he'd committed a million sins!" By this statement from the book, she is obviously very moved by Tom telling the truth about the piece of bark. I think that his aunt and him, really do love each other, but sometimes they don't see eye to eye.

I agree with you Natalie. They don't see how much they mean to each other until Tom runs away to be a pirate. I think Tom's pirating was a good thing for he and his aunts relationship.
